About this Costume

I made the tutu for my final project in Beginning Costume Construction at Auburn my freshman year. I used a hand-illustrated guide from a master tutu maker that my professor had on file... possibly from the 70s or 80s. XD It's a great resource, although it doesn't come with any patterns. Their are 12 layers in the tutu, which MUST be constructed with a specific tutu net, not just any "stiff" tulle you can find at JoAnn's. I ordered mine from tutu.com, an excellent resource for tutu-making. Hours and hours of sewing and ruffling go into tutu-making, so good luck to all who take up the task! :)
The bodice was (poorly) drafted by me as an attempt to create something "accurate" to Tutu's design. Looking back, I wish I'd been accurate to BALLET (like my professor wanted), but I was too blinded by anime-accuracy to care. I'd love to remake the basque and bodice to this costume one day, and also tack the skirt, which I kept natural and full, because I thought that made it look more like the anime. XD;; Even if I do look a little too old to be cosplaying Princess Tutu these days... - Personal Thoughts:
- I felt guilty because most of the Princess Tutu cosplayers provide a lot more information about how they constructed their tutus, so here's my attempt to also be helpful. ^^
I've been dancing since I was 5, so before anyone shares their concerns about standing en pointe, know that I started pointe at 11 or 12, so I'm good! Haven't broken an ankle yet. ;)
Worn on Saturday at Anime Central 2007 for the masquerade with WeGo4CoconutBubbleSex Cosplay. Worn again at Anime Expo 2007.
Wig Details
- How was the wig colored?
- Sharpie spray bottle dyed
- Styling Notes
- Used 2 peach sharpies cut up and dropped into a travel-size spray bottle full of alcohol. Let it set overnight, then sprayed the color throughout the wig and brushed it in.
- Wig Review
- I put the wig in a low bun, according to the style of romantic ballets like Giselle, since I didn't want to cut the wig short and Princess Tutu's hair probably doesn't suddenly transform into a pixie cut when she becomes Princess Tutu. XD I didn't do any hard styling (save for the antennae/ahoge), and just left the bangs soft and natural, although looking back, I wish I'd cut them a little fuller than I did.
