About this Costume
Construction Details:
The hammers were made from painted Utz pretzel tubs with the tops sawed off, and sledgehammer handles through holes cut in the center. I filled them with crumpled newsprint to balance the weight and give them some satisfying heft.
Personal Thoughts:
The Super Mario Bros. movie was my favorite childhood film, and the games in general have been such a treasured part of my life, so I've dreamed of cosplaying something at least reminiscent of their suits toward the end of the film. Over the years I've planned out an outfit for the bros that struck a balance between the more detailed cartoony versions from recent games and the blue-collar, utilitarian look from the movie, using primarily existing clothes to give them an appearance grounded in reality but with that twinge of fantasy from the movie. Kevin Bolk and I have become fast friends over the year 2012, mostly thanks to our mutual love of Mario - we had known of each other for years beforehand through deviantART because of our passion for fanart of the series, and there was this moment where we almost seriously asked each other how we aren't somehow related due to our overlapping personalities and interests. We plan to wear this again for Katsucon 2013. I've always wanted to make a pair of Stompers, so I may add those just for yuks in the future.
