How do you pick a character to cosplay as?

I'm doing a cultural report for a SF class, and I was wondering if anyone would mind helping me? I put a link below to the survey I created in order to gather research. Basically, I am trying to figure out why people choose certain characters to cosplay as and how much role playing goes into cosplay at cons and such.

:3 well im new here but howw i pick who i want to cosplay is usually based on my personality who i can definatley be and who i could be cause im good at cute, serious, funy, and others so usually i pick by that... :3 like for example my first cosplay i am making or well trying to make is Yui Hirasawa from K-ON! and i am exactly like her...so easy enough ^w^ yay hope i pull it off ^.^
