Hello i'm new to cosplay and i need help!

Hi, i'm interested in cosplay and now i have the chance to finally cosplay at a comic con and i wanted to cosplay as the mad hatter. The problem is though that is it a good idea to go with the movie mad hatter or do the mad hatter your own way? I seen it both ways and i really love the 'do it your own way' mad hatter but is it a good idea?
