Original character or recreation??

I am looking to dress as an elf or forest dwelling mythical creature. I am not sure however that I'd want to emulate an existing character or create one. I will forgo the cliché of Legolas even though in popular media he is the closest thing I know to what I am trying for. Any tips on creating wardrobe would be appreciated.
