Wings. Lots of wings.

Post by Siaarn » Tue Feb 14, 2006 11:56 pm

Howdy doo, I'm planning on cosplaying as Lucemon from Digimon, and I can't figure out how the heck i'm gonna make 8 wings, and even worse, I wouldn't know how to attach them to myself without any straps or wires being seen. Here's a photo:

Any tips? D:

Wow, that's a pretty whacky set of wings.

Got no suggestions for the wings themselves, but I do have an idea for the harness. Instead of trying to make the straps small & invisible because one shoulder is exposed, hide them in plain view. Use the character's purple "tattoo" to disguise that strap, and the other will be hidden under the toga. Use woven fabric (not knit because you want a harness to be sturdy, not stretchy) that matches your skin color to make the left shoulder strap. Make the strap wide enough to fit the whole tattoo which you can paint on or applique. Having a wide strap is better for support anyway because it'll be less likely to cut into your skin than a thin strap, especially since your set of multiple wings will likely be pretty weighty.

You can make the right strap the same dimensions as the left one because it'll be hidden under the toga, and you can also incorporate velcro or snaps to attach that part of the toga to the strap so that the toga won't slide off your shoulder or otherwise cause trouble for you. The same can be done around the waist to keep the toga on and the belt hidden (see below).

The two shoulder straps will need to attach to a wide belt somewhat like a cummerbund only less fancy and more sturdy. You want your harness to fit on you snugly so that your wings won't sag or twist around your body. The belt will need to be somewhat tight to prevent the wings from pulling the harness back and making your costume ride up in the front. On the back of the harness, you'll need to attach to the straps a rectangle of sturdy fabric (double up and/or use interfacing or canvas) where you can attach your wings. The rectangle can extend down to include the belt in your case since the wings look like they'll occupy the whole length of your back. In the end, your harness ought to look a bit like a very thin backpack with a big belt.

Hope that all sort of made sense. Good luck with your project! ^_^

Ah... When he was nice and not felt like kicking ass and... taking over the digital world as we know it. *Happy*
I have no suggestions either than to do your best, but that harness sounds like an awesome idea. Good luck, I can't wait to see it!
