Shia Pita Ten Staff/Boot covers...

Post by StrawberryNeko » Wed Aug 24, 2005 3:45 pm

Hello! I was just wondering how other people would suggest to make a Shia staff and boot covers. I'm not a very good seamstress, however... Here is a link to a picture (I'm sorry it isn't very big... :( )

In any case, the staff has some detailing at the bottom... I was thinking of creating the body of the staff out of a dowel rod, and painting a styrofoam ball with pearly paint for the globe on top. I would probably make the detailed part on the bottom out of sculpey, and find a way to attach it...
As for the boot covers, I would probably just find a way to make a very large socklike thing out of black fabric, although bottomless, with elastic straps for around the shoes. I would then take black elastic, and sew a rose on to it and make an elastic loop. I figure that if I put them on my ankles over the cover thingy, it'll bunch around it like Shia's do.[/url]

I've made that costume before. ^_^
Shia

We should have use a slightly skinnier dowel rod; we had to whittle down one end to get it to fit into the globe. Drilled a small hole in the top of the globe and the end of the dowel in order to be able to stick the wire with the bell into the dowel. One thing that turned out to be a good idea was making the rosebud on the end of the staff out of ribbon -- the same ribbon used on the other roses on her dress & stuff. I folded it into the rose shape and put in a few stitches to keep it from springing apart, then we just nailed it to the end of the staff using a small nail with a large-ish head. The nail head was hidden by the petals, and the rose just bounced back into shape no matter what happened to the staff (bumping, setting down, etc.).

I never did get around to making the boot covers. ;_; The crinkly part is actually a cuff so if you go with your idea of a large "sock," make it slightly baggy and long/tall enough and to fold down the top, and you'll get the right look.

It's a cute costume. My petticoats didn't turn out how I wanted, but oh well. Live and learn. Good luck with yours! ^_^

mrs. tomoe it looks as if you used a globe like those that attract birds. Or something along those lines.
I'd probably use something like that myself, or the foam ball (but spray paint it, regular paint is a mess with those things) with the rod as suggested.

It's a plastic ornament. There was also an iridescent one at the store, but it was transparent which would've made the dowel visible inside. That would've looked weird and clunky. If you can find an opaque, pearlized one, I think it would look really nice.
