wood and pvc is always good or even insulation foam core. it's cheap (about 8-11 bucks a 8foot sheet) and very durable you can cut and carve it to look right then paint it..just be sure to seal it before heading out it can chip.
I am open for prop Commissions from the following series: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Sailor Moon and cardcaptors Sakura.

What you can do is take a pvc pipe, triple expanding foam, hot glue gun, a carpet cutter and paper mache.
1. Draw out the pattern on cardboard and cut it out.
2. Glue it to the PVC pipe with a hot glue gun.
3. Cover it in triple expanding foam (Such as Great Stuff from home depot) No matter what brand you buy it will take at least 3 hours to cure.
4. Carve it and sand it if you desire to get your shape using the cardboard cut out as a guide. (The Cardboard acts as support as well)
5. Cover it with painters tape
6. Cover it with paper mache
7. cover with paper mache clay and sand.
Now all you need to do is paint it. I've experimented with this before and it works wonders.
