After watching the tutorials...

Is caulk the only type of glue I could use for gluing hair extensions together when making a weft or are there other types of glue available that can do the same?

Well, I think you can use other substitutes but just stay away from anything hot, ya know?

Yes of course, heat melts the wig. I have some glue that is used for gluing clothes together (it doesn't wask off once it's dry) and it's a really strong powerful glue that is less messier than caulk. I have no luck with caulk, thats why I asked.

Ah, I see. Yea, I really don't see why you can't use others if they basically will work out the same way.

Thank you so much Hemuloki-sama! ^^ I've decided to go with the Femme Fatale wig ( because the front of Yuki's bangs are longer than that of the bob as well as I want to do some altering to it myself ) and you helped out a bunch. :) I'm glad I won't have to use the caulk ( reeeally wasn't looking forward to any of that mess ) and I hope the results turn out pretty! :) Thanks again! ^^

Ok need seriously a second opinion or second set of brains. :D Ok .. I'm just guessing here so don't kill me.

Squalls' hair from Final Fantasy 8 is short at the back and around near the ears, and from there is gets longer as you get to the top and front of the head. I know for sure that the front is the longest set of hair that touchs around the cheek and almost close to the chin, but I'm not to sure about the back, I'm just guessing it's the shortest part of his hair cut (kind of like a long cut of a soup bowl hair cut with volume and dimension). I tried going to cosplay sites and even at google and yahoo for some really good pics, but no use. I've been searching for like weeks already and my eyes hurt from searching Squalls' hair (and some facts about the biological cell, but thats a different story). Please help. Thank you.

I'm guessing you've already seen this pic but here,
http://c-uncut.com/media/ff8-squall.jpg

There really isn't any picture online that shows the back of his head. You would really have to go to the game itself and either pause it or screencap it. I had to pause it when I was styling my Hatori wig. But anyway, unless you'll good at covering up the fact that longer length wigs really weren't meant to be short, I would begin with a bob and totally rework it.

The Femme works nicely for this too because Squall's hair is kind of fluffy and when the femme is cut from its length to a shorter style, it gets fluffy too. So basically with the back just cut and sort of layer it together. Hmm, it's hard to describe but here's sort of what I mean.

Basically just comb it into place?

wow so cool. Yeah but bob wigs are either too expensive or someone already bid on the wig. I normally use long wigs since I can use the extra long pieces as extensions. It's alot of work put I'm on vacation, so I have all the time in the world to work this. Also it's cheaper than buying more extensions from the shop and sometimes they don't carry that color for the wig. Plus sometimes the wig on't even need alot of extensions so I save up the rest for another wig that might be of the same color or close to it. esides my Squall wig isn't a party wig like the Reno wig. It has alot more hair. I think it has enough to produce extensions for itself and for the Reno wig (If I can dye it of course).

I was abit confused on the color for my Squalls wig, since in some sites Squalls' hair is light brown and in others his hair is like a mocca color, that reddish brown color. The wig I got is more or less like the mocca since in the game depeding how the light hits it his hair turns into that reddish brown color. Real nice in my opinion. Also the reddish color really brings out my eyes. Anyways sticking to the mocca color.

I cut the back part alittle, like the wig you displayed. Thanks for the reference. The extra pieces were used as extensions so my wig is alot more fuller than my own hair, especially on the back part. Working now is the top part will ask my sister if she wants to be my maniquin again. *LOL*

Oh by the way, thanks again on helping me with my sisters' Reno wig. So far the top part is awesome. Now rather than using gel to spike it up she can just use her fingers, less sticky too. I just cut up some pieces into different sizes which made it all feathery than I used an 80s technique of just teasing the hell out of the hair. It was fun teasing the wig. *LOL* After washing it with warm water to make it straight (it was all curly) ten times. wow that water technique works wonders, it even made the wig shiny again. *giggles* Way better than experimenting with control heat straighten irons, in some sites they say you can straighten wigs with irons that can control the heat. Personaly I thought of wigs as plastic so luckly with common sense I thought that plastic would melt in heat, so didn't use that technique, but wanted to straighten it anyways,so thanks alot for that site.

Right now I'm trying to find the extra pieces of Renos' wig that I saved from cuting the wig in the first place to reuse it as an extensions for the back part. If thats not enough will buy some extensions at this place that sells them for a good price, plus since this wig is a party wig it's color is every propular so I wouldn't have trouble finding extra extensions for it.

Again many thanks on the help.

Bob wigs, depending on where you get them, are the same or even less than the longer wigs. That's really what you pay for with: thickness and length.

But keep in mind that I use Amphigory stuff and all my extensions come from Dr.Locks, which is nice but its shipping prices just recently went up. Not nearly as expensive as my local shop though where the extensions of just common colors are $6.99 per bag at minimum. O.o, crazy! Dr. Locks' are $3.99 with shipping.

But when I do style wigs and have a lot of extra extensions, I tend to reuse them everywhere or on my own hair creations.

But with Squall's color, it's really how your complexion is. I would go with a regular brown just because that's my own hair color and it would look natural for my skin type. The reddish is nice but it sometimes catches the light wrong and looks waaaaay off! But if you got one that has a nice reddish tint to it like natural brown hair does, then I would imagine that your wig looks splendid.

The bad thing with the longer length wigs though that I wouldn't consider for the Squall one, was just that his style is obviously short male and his hugs his neck. The long wigs just aren't meant to do that by themselves without some messing around with and even then, you have to make sure they hug.

As for the Reno wig, you do know that gel won't work on wigs, right? Gel is meant to be used on real hair because it interacts with the chemicals and oils naturally on your scalp. With Reno, I would have just cut to an appropriate length and flipped upside down and then sprayed with hairspray until I got what I wanted and then I would trim.

But here's where I part from you. Unfortunately, though wigs are merely very nice soft plastic, Amphigory's are meant to be messed around with heat and I, do indeed use a straightening iron to straighten mine. Party wigs wouldn't have been able to put up with it but any other high quality wig would have been straightened in under an hour with my straightening iron and you would have still been waiting for yours to dry so that you could have watered it down 9 more times. >.> that's a lot of wasted time.

Alas, I won't argue this other than me merely giving my side. I'm already one of those people that tells people about it but I'm not about to argue the pros and cons....again.

But even with a non-straightened wig, the hair is still curly near the tips. Check the Dejiko pic. So you were right in straightening your wig regardless of the fact if you were to cut all of that curl off.

Now that wig just really just cut without anything straightening.

As for your extensions, why don't you buy them from Dr.Locks?

wow $7.00 is crazy especially for just one. $4 S&H, cool thats cheaper than eBay.

Yea I have notice my Squall wig has high quality hair so I use some heat on it. I use a Revo style brush while blow drying on low that gives volume and that little curve on the side. of my Squall wig. I had to be very careful. Too much can pull out some hair. Luckly I over did the extensions for this wig with its own hair, so it's not noticable. I just love the way it came out.

I knew it wasn't ment when my sister pour that gel stuff all over her wig (this was a year ago and we didn't really do any research on wigs just experimenting and learn as we went long). I just found a way to give it that funcky look without any hair produces, just plain cutting up some pieces shorter then teasing it, then just play with it with your fingers. There is still a bit of curl around the bang but have noticed that I could still use them to give the longer straighter bangs some lift.

*runs and hides away from ugly green wig, peeks out*

It only needed time and love, not butcher.

Yes, especially because I never use just one and in the case of one wig, I used Six.

You should get some Reno pictures since according to you, it turned out so well.

*nods* One is just isn't enough.

So far its turning out good. The Reno wig just needs more extensions on the fornt and back. It's the top part that turn out so cool. Also it's my Squall wig that is finished. Anyways my digital camera ran out of batteries. *cries* I only have taken a few my camera decided to die on me right when I was going to take a pic of the finished Squall wig. *sighs* I really want to take pictures of the wig as it starts to take shape and then see how it finishes. That way people who are discouraged of their choose of mistakingly getting bad wigs may have some reference on how to make it better, so that the wig doesn't end up in the big pile of rejects and the person is forced to spend more money on another wig, when the one they have is just as good.

*runs after her*
I don't mean it that way,I'm sorry. It's just that it looks weird thats all. The bangs are just strange. I never seen bangs that short before. I'm just not to accostom to that, so don't get too personal with such comments. Please.

Hi it's me again. ^^ *waves shyly * Anyway, it seems Yuki has been put to a screeching hatl due to a recent awful con experience. I won't get into details ( if I don't I'll be talking for an hour at minimum ) let's just say I have been....'inspired' to cosplay not as Shuichi from Gravitation. And let's just say I need to knock the socks off all the other Gravitation cosplayers next year. *ahem* anyway, I wanted your opinion as to what type of wig I should buy for him. ^^ I completely trust your opinion, but please keep in mind I'm an awful wig styler and due to recent costs of ANOTHER wig >.< I'm having commissioned for me, I don't really have the money to have someone else style it for me. So yeah, if you have any input, I will ( once again, lol ) love you forever. Here's a piccy of who I'm talking about. :)

Oh your so lucky eBay has alot of good wigs that look like that for cheap. As for color that type of style only come in neutral color, but have found this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 41953&rd=1

ok this one just needs volume and extensions, the extensions are for the bangs since the characters bangs are longger than that of the wig.

Juci, the bangs are accurate to Dejiko's style >.> The short ones really aren't the bangs either as much as it's just the front part of the wig. @.o

But I'm not angry or anything, I'm just going to say this though...with a wig commissioner, all you have are personal comments flying about. The wigs are styled by your own hands so any comments on the final product, will be taken personally.

Nazomi, I'm sorry that the Yuki wig didn't reach its full fruitation. My Uriel wig just sits while I wait to actually make the costume so I know how that feels. Anyway, I don't recommend the one wig that Juci's link led too. Shuichi's hair is more of a pink with a darker shade of pink in it. The picture that you're presented is more of a purple so it led Juci in the wrong direction.

Anyway, all you need is a femme in Perky, the light pink, and just cut. The way you cut it will ....................................

You know, I have a Shuichi wig I have to get done for Expo so I'll be working on that like tomorrow night. If you want, I can give you a step by step guide complete with pictures on how I did it?

See I did not know that. :D

*giggles*

Some critism I do take into consideration especially if it helps to improve a product, but I'm not going to allow a comment to ruin my day as some people do attend to let things get either too personal or too seriously. It's just shows bad character.

As an artist who paints from time to time. I got to learn not to let critism get the best of me otherwise I might as well pack my bags and stop what I'm doing because it's a cut throw business afterall and weak people who cry over spill milk really never do make it.

I'm glad your a strong person who saw I wasn't being mean over that tiny comment and saw some humor to it. I don't want to lose my head over that. *giggles*

Hemulokie-sama....that would be so unbelievably awesome if you could. I'm so frightened of taking a pair of scissors to a wig but I really just can't afford to commission another one. >.< And who knows, maybe learning to style a bit now will help me gain confidence in later wigs. ^^ But yes, step by step instructions would be the most amazing thing ever. :)

Btw, I know this question sounds really random but I figured you'd probably be the best one to answer. With costume wigs like these, are they ok to wear for like everyday? I know there are those wigs that are MEANT to be worn everyday, but with, like I said 'costume wigs', is it any different? or do they get like...sun damage or something. ^^' I know, I sound so stupid but I'm just curious. And...does getting them wet ruin them? I mean like rain? Sorry I sound like such a moron but I'm a real newb in general. :D

Wigs like from Amphigory are able to be worn everyday because they look nice, feel nice and can duplicate the texture of hair quite nicely. Costume wigs look like costume wigs. But Amphigory wigs are meant to take heat so in the sun, they can only stand so much, ya know? You can go outside but don't go baking in the sun with a wig on.

But getting a wig wet isn't going to ruin them.

ANYWAY! I finally got enough time to write the step by step thingy!

Okay! I started out with a femme fatale from Amphigory in Perky. It's a really light pink to begin with and for those fans of Shuichi, it's too light so you'll have to color it darker. In this case, I didn't color it because I ran out of time and the cosplayer didn't want to pay the extra bucks.

So yea, the wig is like shoulder length all combed out but it's also really wavy and since I didn't want to straighten all that I was cutting off, I just cut it short and left only some of it wavy.
Image
In that picture, it's all wavy but I used my straightener and straightened the top few layers of it, leaving only the bottom really curly. If you leave the bottom curly, when you cut the hair really short in back like a boy's, you'll have that already creating the under flip quite nicely.

Step 1:
Create the bangs. Shuichi has bangs but alas, my wig did not. If you have bangs in the wig you have, life will be infinitely easier for you. If you don't, here's how ya do it. It's in my LJ too so I'm only going to paraphase it.
Image
Take the hair and comb it forward. Keep it like that and use a hairdryer to heat the bangs into place. Once they stay down on their own, you can use hairspray to spray it into place and then cut to desired length. For you, Nazomi, I would suggest you cut long and then go shorter and shorter. Like cut at the chin and then continue upwards. I ended up never cutting the bangs like Shuichi in these pics but it's really easy. Just take them and cut the shape into it manually.

Step 2:
Cutting off Length
Image
Shuichi has very short hair and it's ruled by the ears. When you cut the parts in front, be sure to pick a spot for your ears to come through. Once you do that, separate the hair on both sides evenly and use something to tie or hold the back hair away from the front.
At this point, all you have to do is cut.

Image
Because I wasn't worried about making a mistake cause with wigs you can always find ways to make mistakes work, I just hacked off at the right length right off the bat. With you, I suggest working your way up to the right length. When you hold the back hair from view, you should see Shuichi begin to form. But as you can see, because I straightened it, you'll notice that it's too straight to have Shuichi's form. His hair is curled under so it has that distinct shape of a face frame. So with it straightened, it won't be able to do that. You can curl it using one of two ways:

Step 3: Curl
If you have a hair straightener like me, you can do it this way. Just take the hair you want curled and pull it through just like you would normally with your hair. It'll shape towards the face and if you get some kinks just do it again and comb it out afterwards. Just spray with hairspray after you're done.

If you don't have a hair straightener, get a curler, hairspray and your hair dryer. Just curl the hair around the curler, spray with hairspray and then use the dryer to create the curl. Much safer than the hair straightener but both can lead to the same outcome of frying the wig into hell.
Image
When you're done, you should get something like that. As you can see, it has a shape now.
Image
Just repeat that on the other side.
Image

Step 4:
The back is essentially the hardest part on longer wigs like this because they weren't meant to go this short. With Shuichi, his hair is a bob so it'll curl over just like his bangs did but they'll be shorter and eventually, the wig will be cut shorter in back.
What I did was separate the parts that I wanted to curl out from the parts that I just wanted to cut short.
Image
Everything that is hanging down from the small ponytail I put in is going to be cut much shorter so all I did was cut in the shape that Shuichi's hair goes in. Like, I cut it shorter near the ear and cut it in a diagonal line to the back point.
Now, with the curling parts, just cut the hair to the desired length and then curl like you did earlier. Easy!
Image
Image

Those were the final pictures I took before the bangs were cut so I'll post that whenever I get the chance. But yea, in the middle one, you can see why I told you to leave the bottom layer wavy.
OH! With the wig and especially the back, I teased it with my fingers. Usually that doesn't work except to make it messy and tangly but I just used it to give it that extra fluff and once you got it looking nice, just spray it with hairspray.

Anyway, if you have questions, just ask.

Juci, I don't mind telling or showing people how I do the things I do. It's not rocket science and all I did was cut, shape and curl.

Pippin

Post by almsays_dreams » Tue Jul 05, 2005 5:21 am

Ok, here's a question,
I'll be cosplaying pippin from lord of the rings and I need to curl, cut and dye a whole wig, because I want that brownish red colour he has. Any suggestions on how to do the curl, and what sharpie colours to use. (I would go with katie blair's dye, but i don't have alot of money) Here are some reference pictures.

Hm, I would suggest looking around a bit more first for the exact color. You can do it with a brown wig and a red sharpie, easily, but it's horribly time consuming.

However, doing it with a sharpie will give you the exact effect you want because you'll be slowly controlling where you want it to go and how much you want in one spot. Sometimes with Katie Bair's dye, you mess up and it gets in places you don't want it to go.

ANYWAY!

With any of the Hobbit's, it's really hard to get that effect exactly in a wig just because it's something that natural hair does so well on its own and because a wig doesn't duplicate it well.

But from looking at the pictures, all I can see is that Pippin's hair is really like, loose curls ...hmm, sort of like banana curls but looser than that.

I explained it above though with the using the curl thing with the hair dryer. Well, do that all over the Pippin wig and finger comb for desired look.

Ritsuka from Loveless, yes?

You can order something similiar here at Amphigory.com
http://www.amphigory.com

You just choose the one that fits mostly what you're gonna do. The Lulu or China Doll would be alright to work with for Ritsuka. The bangs are already in and the Lulu has that nice short back. Anyway, just take that and cut to desired length and then add in ears.

Are you decently skilled or is this your first attempt?

Start with Amphigory's Enchantment and cut in bangs. Add some extensions from Dr.Locks and add some ears in. That's the simple explanation.

Why would you need a straightening iron if you find one that's straight? But anyway, I use a straightening iron....however, I only use it on the setting 1.

Try the hot water method to straightening it out first though. More less dangerous for beginners. Also, just look around for straight wigs.

I have a question about styling a Ranma wig

I pretty much have an Idea of what I want to try to do to fluff up the bangs from reading wig tutorials but my main worry is getting the ponytail to curl up like Ranma's and having it still be comphy. I was thinking of using a wire but after wearing the wig alone I kept thinking how could I keep it semi comphy with a wire poking me in the back of my head. Any idea?

Well, the picture doesn't work but I somewhat know the character's hair.

Anyway, have you tried forming the curls yourself with hairspray and just your hands? I find that works for the smaller curls and when you need a more extreme curl to find a curler, curl the hair around it, and then spray with hairspray. You would then use a hairdryer to heat the hair up and when you feel it's warm, stop and let the hair cool. Unwrap for the curler and you should have a curled piece of hair.

Yea that is how I figured I would do the bangs but it's the ponytail I am more worried about. I think a wire might work but I don't know how to make it so It won't poke and become a bother and I end up not wanting to wear it at all.

Depending on the type of your character will call for different styles. What type of character is it?

Also, if you like long but funky, you can always do both in having it long but having it choppy layered near the top so you can curl it up in flips. If you add colors to the different sections, you can easily have both.

But like I said, which type of character is it? Some call for a specific hairstyle.

Squall... we all know he has impossibly fabulous hair. But gosh-darnit I like a challenge. I'm planning on doing this with a wig. I've seen some other creations of a squall wig, but I didn't really like them as much. I'll definitly put
a lot of effort to make it believable and perfect. I've never done any cosplay, and also live on Cape Cod.... not a lot of people know what the word means, so I'm not sure how hard this stuff will be to come by. Thoughts? Suggestions? Maybe a walk-through if I try to be cute enough? Mrrrrr.... ^__^

Sorry for the long absence....hope everyone still wants an answer?

Man, I feel so tired as of late....sorry once again!

Anyway, Skids, I have no wigs available at the moment to show you a full on tutorial so I can't cut one of my own ones up for ya. With a Squall wig, his hair is like in the medium range because his back is short but it's just his bangs that are a bit on the weird side. It's actually easily achieved by cutting in bangs and just styling with hairspray but look around ebay too or wig places online and you'll get his style already in stock sometimes. I know a few friends that found perfect Squall wigs on the internet!

http://www.amphigory.com has a cutting in tutorial for bangs as well as my link in my LJ. If you want to know for sure, my tutorial for the Shigure wig has exactly what I have in mind for Squall.

Shiyoku, if your character is a warrior, you can have it long but you need to keep the hair contained. A warrior in all aspects, has to have her long locks out of her way when she fights. Long hair whipping about will blind her and leave her open for attacks!

Hmmmm, my suggestion is a kind of strange but hang in there with me. Have the look be with long hair, half up and half down. But separate a few pieces out for braiding. In order to keep the hair contained, you can use the braids (I'm thinking somewhere around 8 or 9) and you can twist and wrap that around the tail of the hair to your own content. You can combine in the braids different colored extensions to give it colors!

In the end, you'll get a ponytail like hair-do that's wrapped with a few braids. How's that? I can draw a mini picture for ya?

Livvylove, you can use foam if you want a little poof to your ponytail. Wires just weigh the hair down.
