Angel Sanctuary Katou

I am trying to get a costume together for Katou from Angel Sanctuary in time for AFO. I have the clothes (who would have guessed being a headbanger would help with cosplay 8) ) But I need help in constructing his cross sword/staff that will break down to fit in a bag or suitcase.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Sorry I have a pic my friend gave me but my scanner isn't working, so can' t show you a pic. Also I haven' tfound many off the net most of my reference is from my manga or this pic from I believe an artbook. :D

Agh...it would really help if you had a picture.....maybe try drawing it out?
I would think the best way would be to make it in peices (duh lol) and make it so that it joins together by maybe screwing together or fitting together. You could maybe do this by using PVC pipe and gluing a slightly smaller diameter pipe or piece of plasti in one side so that it fits together.
Does that make sense?
